De Panda was bedoeld als eenvoudige en functionele auto. Het in 1980 geïntroduceerde model werd gekenmerkt door een hoekig ontwerp van de hand van Giorgetto Giugiaro. Dit ontwerp lag ook aan de basis van de latere Fiat Uno. De eerste generatie van de Fiat Panda was een groot verkoopsucces: in totaal werden meer dan 4 miljoen stuks verkocht.
